Fear Is The Little Death

August 21, 2005 / by psychovirus

What scares you? Do you know? Said another way, what are you afraid of? Almost everyone has something or someone that they are afraid of. Some people are afraid of almost everything. It keeps them from moving, living, acting, participating. They are frozen into a very narrow segment of life as they cannot break from their routine. If they do, their fears will overwhelm them. If you are one of those people, please, please keep reading.

Forget the memories that scare you. These are memories formed when you were young. There may have been an instance when you were greatly frightened by something. One or both your parents told you to not be scared. Intriguingly, your subconscious mind did not hear the not. It ignores negatives altogether. The result is that it heard that you were to be scared. The result was that you were scared more often by more things than your peers. Telling you to forget the memories that scare you relieves you from the effect of all such memories.

On the other hand, remember the memories that let you be scared. Believe it or not, there are times when it is okay to be scared. Think of the thrill rides at a carnival or theme park. If you are never scared, you will not get a thrill from the rides. You also need a little fear to keep you from doing something seriously wrong. A little fear will make you more cautious such as when there is a live electric cable lying on the ground. A little fear will keep you from reaching to pick it up without checking to see if it is dead.

A little fear is a good thing. Too much fear is debilitating. This will give you balance between the two.
